Review: In ‘Turn Up Charlie,’ the Manny Isn’t Just a Man, He’s Idris Elba

The new Netflix series “Turn Up Charlie” gets to the heart of Idris Elba, sitting at the intersection of his two passions: deejaying and making heartwarming dramedies that reflect his working-class London origins.

Wait, what?

O.K., I don’t actually know what drives Elba, who created (with Gary Reich) and stars in “Turn Up Charlie.” But despite his action hero persona and style-icon status, there is evidence that his heart isn’t entirely in playing unnerving gangsters (Stringer Bell, “The Wire”), heroic cops (John Luther, “Luther”) and Asgardian sentries (Heimdall, Marvel Cinematic Universe).
