Senate approves back pay for federal workers when shutdown ends

The Senate approved a bill by voice vote to provide back pay to federal workers currently on furlough or working without pay when the government shutdown ends. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said President Trump has indicated he will sign the bill, which first must be passed by the House.

Mr. Trump and congressional Democrats are currently at an impasse over the partial government shutdown, with Mr. Trump refusing to sign any legislation which does not provide funding for a border wall. McConnell has said that he will not put any bills that won’t get Mr. Trump’s signature on the Senate floor.
